A Neko Story

It was a rainy day in April [which is quite unusual because the rainy season starts around June] when I went to a coffee shop in Pasig to meet a friend of mine to catch up on lost time and drop off some film stuffs that she purchased from me. We were supposed to meet up around 6pm but I miscalculated the  travel time [the place, as it turns out, is a mere 10 mins away by public transport from my workplace] and ended up waiting for her for two and a half hours. So, I didn't have much of a choice.

I bought my "pseudo"-coffee, lighted a cigarette, and flipped open my book to kill the coming hours whilst checking my phone for updates from my friend. I was reading most of  the time but I got distracted a few times by people asking for a light and some loud conversations from the nearby tables. A few minutes later, the rain started to pour and the shop patrons sitting at the open tables had to transfer inside to avoid getting drenched. My spot was relatively sheltered by an overhang so I needed not move.

Then this guy suddenly sprang out from the hedge, joining the others flee from the rain.
he stopped halfway from the footpath trying to check where to take shelter. My crazy cat person instinct immediately told me to call on the little fella and he did come near me, meowing. Very friendly feline. I petted him a few times and he decided to lie down beneath my chair while I continued reading.

I remembered having some leftovers from my lunch so I decided to give the little fella a small treat. I discreetly snagged a scrap of chicken wrapped in the coffee shop's paper napkin and handed it over to him. He gobbled it up in seconds and meowed asking for more, so I handed him the whole thing [yeah, it was messy]. Satisfied, he curled up beneath my chair and waited for the rain to stop. Then, I went back to my book and cigarettes for another hour. I saw my friend approach the table after a while. I told her that I met a new friend while waiting for her, but when I turned to show her, I realized that the cat has already gone.

Stranded.

Sometime last August, my friends and I visited another friend who just moved in to his new home. The weather was a bit heavy and we didn't expect that it would pour that hard. There wasn't any storm signal but it rained as if God was cleaning house. The metro was flooded, classes were suspended, and power outages were expected. In other words, we were stranded.
